Thank You Curbed

Thank you so very much Curbed so very much for featuring my design and highlighting the room for your feature of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island "Project Design 2013" with media partner New York Cottages & Gardens, and Kravet.

"...Other highlights: a playhouse inside Anthony Baratta's sun room, a floral ceiling in the bedroom by Mehditash Design, and rustic wood paneling by Suzanne Costa...." - Curbed

It was truly a fantastic experience, and I am thrilled that all my brand partners in the space are recieving so much attention and appreciation for their contributions to the lives of those that need it most.

Before and After: The Baker Furniture difference for The Ronald McDonald House

It all started at Design Bloggers Conference in March just after the Barbara Barry presentation hosted by Kravet, so in a way it was inevitable that I would be drawn to the Barbara Barry collection for Baker Furniture when deciding upon which special pieces I wanted to include in my room at the Ronald McDonald house of Long Island.

It was important to provide some special pieces of furniture in the room for the families, especially as they would be spending so much of their time in these rooms.
I have always loved the Barbara Barry Dressing table, with it's slight curve and fluting.. here in its original Java finish it is warm and and feminine..

For my room, however, I wanted to maintain the light and airy feeling and decided to keep both the dressing tables and Etageres from the same collection in the White painted finish.

I also needed to pair a comfortable side chair, for which the Archetype Side Chair was a perfect match.

Although this chair was fabulous in its simplicity, I wanted to incorporate 2 types of Kravet and Brunshwig et Fils fabrics to create that contrast in color, texture and pattern.

Fabrics: {blue} Brunchswig et Fils Chancellor Strie // {white} Contract - Kravet Atomic Pearl

and this was how it all came together.. thanks completely to the great workroom and job led by John Hayes in Connecticut. They helped bring together all the reupholstery of these pieces and did a fantastic job.

On the heels of the launch of the new collection for Baker by the renowned interior designer, Jacques Garcia, well known for his design of Hotel Costes in Paris and the redesign of the amazing Hotel Mamounia which I was lucky enough to spend my honeymoon at albeit before the redesign, I was thrilled to be able to include one of his designs in the space at the Ronald McDonald House redesign as well.

I fell in love with the comfort and design of this Jacques Garcia for Baker "Tivoli" lounge chair, with its sloping curved back and sharp clean lines.

These distinct lines allowed me to play with pattern, texture and nailheads once again while pairing the gorgeous Sandhurst Marino fabric by Peter Fasano and the Malva Lee Jofa warm neutral cotton blend.

This time, the nailheads were just loosely placed, adding a hint of glimmer around the base of the feet and at the top of the curved back.

I cannot state enough how grateful I am to Baker for working with me in providing these beautiful pieces for this room, and the families that will be using them for many .. many years to come.
Not only did they provide the pieces for us, they made it possible to have them finished and delivered to the home with plenty of time for the open house presentation. Thank you in my name, and in the name of all the families that call the house their home.

In case you weren't able to as yet see the new pieces from the Jacques Garcia collection, head to High Point Market where you are able to see them in person or visit the site here.

Before and After - The New California Closet - Ronald McDonald House

As I continue on my Before & After series of posts through the remodel of my room from Project Design 2013, beginning with the bathroom remodel  and then the stunning custom Gracie wallpaper, I continue with the built in California Closet that was so generously offered to my room in the Ronald McDonald house of Long Island,

As we first took our tour throughout the house back in March of this year, we were able to speak with many of the families and listen to their needs and wishes for how I could better provide them with what they needed to feel even more comfort in their bedroom throughout their stay.

One of the main issues was truly the need for storage.. not storage of clothing, as that really isnt a priority necessarily during this time, but instead a need to be able to organize all the paperwork, documents, medicines and the like that they need to keep at hand at all times in their rooms.

Laundry also was a big issue, as each family would be able to maintain their own laundry needs with the many areas provided for this in the house, but also upon departure each family needed to store their used linens in the basket provided (as seen above). These closets were great with amble size, they just simply could use a great makeover .. so of course I immediately reached out to my friends at California Closets, and specifically Carolyn Musher, with whom I have had the great pleasure in working with for my interior design projects and asked them to help me create something amazing.

We went through all the options .. styles .. and many possibilities that California Closets offers ...

At the end of the day, I was really excited about using the Mocha Latte Finish.. and this is what Carolyn presented me with .. a great solution for vanity, drawers and shelving space as well as their very own laundry basket!

This was the final result.. a great storage space in a beautiful finish, with vanity area, shelving and of course the very convenient laundry drawer. What more could I have asked for?

Thank you Thank you California Closets, and Carolyn Musher for making this happen!

In case you missed the event, or the video of my room.. here it is again.

Before & After: Gracie Wallpaper for Ronald McDonald Project Design

From yesterday's post of the bathroom remodel for the Ronald McDonald house of Long Island, I wanted to venture back into the bedroom through the entry and focus on the incredible custom wallpaper collaboration with Gracie Studio that has generated many an "ohhh and ahhh" for the visitors coming into the room.

I am so pleased with the end result, especially on the ceiling as it really helped create a very serene environment in which the families can truly feel as though they were embraced by love and warmth as they look into the blue sky above...
Jennifer & Mike Gracie

With an 8ft ceiling but a room with a very awkward trapezoid shape, I wanted to draw your eye in and help establish a more ample and regular space through the trim and wallpapered ceiling.

While I was working on the design of the room, I remembered that a while back I had received an email from Jennifer Gracie and decided to reach out to her crossing all my fingers and toes in the hopes that they would be willing to partner with me and create some of their amazing wallpaper in the name of this great cause.

Wouldn't you know it, they welcomed the idea wholeheartedly and off I was rushing to their great showroom at the D&D Building to have a first look at all the options available to me. A family run company, since its inception in 1898 and with modern day clients such as Tory Burch, that also included Gracie as part of the backdrop to last season's New York Fashion Week runway..

I knew I was in great hands. The options are tremendous, from Vintage and Antique panels in sepia, black and white all the way through the color spectrum to any custom color a designer could dream of.

1. SY-500 Mid-Century Slate 2. SY-239 Gilded Garden 3. SY-216 Slate Forest

Vintage Gracie panels. 1/VG4 – handpainted panel by artist Lieung from the 1960’s, and VG51 –
painted in the 1930’s/40’s.
Antique Panels. The first image is 534 (#5) a French 18th century all-over pattern.
The last image is a panel part of Passage des Déstroits.

We are quite familiar with the more traditional panels, either on paper or silk backing with floral and nature inspired motifs, but I did quite like the more geometric glamorous gold pattern as featured above and can't wait to be able to use it in an upcoming design project.

1. SY-650 Mint Blossom  2. GT-6 Gold Fret

But once I considered all of my options, I decided on this panel. I really liked the tree, branches and flowers and felt that they would be soothing and yet still captivating for both my entry and ceiling treatments.
SY-205 Caroline Street

Initially we tried to leave the original background color, but as I wanted to have the lacquered finish we needed to select a different ground. This meant that the paper would have a stone like pattern to it, almost creating the illusion of panels within the panels..

But once they began, it just didn't feel right. So we sent the artists a sample of the Brunshwig et Fils fabric as a source for the blue I really wanted as the background (as seen above) and they recolored the paper sample for me .. Perfection!

The panels were quickly coming to life, and we were busy preparing the room and when I say "we" I actually mean Oliver Marinovic and his team ~ that added the trim molding to enclose the space within the ceiling, and frame the closet area all awaiting he paper installation.

With the greatest care, and attention to each detail. Matching the seams, ensuring that each flower was of equal distance .. honestly, it was a very long day but well worth the end result!

Thanks again Gracie for allowing me to share your beautiful product with each and every family that will call Room 101 their home.

Before & After: Remodeling the Bathroom at the Ronald McDonald House

I continue the Before and After series of my Ronald McDonald house remodel today, with a focus on the remodel of the existing Bathroom.

Although perfectly clean and hospitable, the existing space and finishes were not necessarily the oasis and refuge I was hoping to create.

My initial inspiration for my room, began with images that made me feel a little touch of "home" .. my beloved Lisbon, Portugal. I love the way blue and white pattern is so dominant in so much of the visual landscape of the city.. and patterned "calcada" stone cover many of the old city streets.

So when I saw a post by Lee Nicholson of Filmore Clark based in Los Angeles, I knew this would be the PERFECT fit and reached out to Lee right away. To my great surprise, she was so excited to partner with me on the room, that we started designing these custom concrete tiles to match my color scheme right away.

So we got busy quite quickly, as these tiles are custom made and take some time to produce and chose my color palette.

The concept for the Bathroom .. with colored elevation for the installers to follow
In order to complete the look, I decided to reach out to the amazing team at Brizo, and ask them if they would too be interested in participating in my bathroom remodel.

I remembered from my time with them at New York Fashion Week that there was a collection inspired by the lighthouses in Portugal so without beating that theme to a pulp, it just so happened that they were the perfect match and fit for the existing plumbing.

The Baliza collection, by Brizo, is a beautiful pairing to the concrete tiles by Filmore Clark.

Right before the time to have my tiles come in and start the installation of the bathroom, I was grateful to have received a sample of the rendered selection for the final color palette before it was shipped out.

Take 1 - Not exactly what we were looking for...

Needless to say, I was looking for a more gray tone and wasn't thrilled with this color mixture. It just didn't feel right. If there is a lesson to be learned here, ALWAYS GET A SAMPLE!

So with the help from Lee at Filmore Clark, I was able to change the beige tone closer to the gray that we were looking for... and they came out in perfectly!

Perfected color way ... and final result!

No install ever goes without it's mishaps but I must say that thanks to some quick thinking, a little help from Diamond Glass with some quick mirror install, and help from Laurence of House of Laurence that donated the labor to install the bathrooms throughout the house, the final result is one that I am truly proud of.

Thanks to Raina Kattelson for some *STYLING* love before my Photo Shoot
