Holiday House 2012: Paula and Martha

Martha & Paula
Welcome! Let's meet Paula & Martha.

The bi-coastal design team that shares a passion for art, and met at their time at Retail design firm, Naomi Leff Interior Design.

In 2005, the partnership between Paula & Martha began:
Martha Angus leads the San Francisco office, while Paula Caravelli head the New York team.

They make the bi-coastal relationship work!

With backgrounds and experience, both in art and interior design, both commercial and residential, their projects are varied and have received much recognition of the years.

In this year's Holiday House they took charge with the "Winter Solstice" themed entrance, allowing the art to help introduce elements of color and texture to the strong interior architectural details that exist in the house.

The strong octagon shape, which repeats in the flooring and ceiling, was used as inspiration for this custom area rug in Hemp and Silk which I really thought was very well placed within this space and helped create a central focal point for the French steel center table by Briggs House Antiques with the Baccarat Crystal chandelier from the Tom Thomas Gallery above it.

Another custom rug - *Ribbon Rug* design by Paula Caravelli, both made by Doris Leslie Blau for this space while custom pillows, and soft fabric details, such as the fur throw, added the extra touches to the space that make it feel more inviting.

Donghia / Larsen pillow fabrics;

Soft textures, and warm soothing colors are key to this design scheme, slightly different than choice of palette by both Tobi Fairley and Geoffrey Bradfield of the last two posts.

Custom Ron Gorchov paintings (via Cheim Read) in Pink

Two custom pieces of art by Ron Gorchov represented by Cheim Read gallery, flank the Evelyn Lauder entrance hallway. Ron Gorchov is American artist, born in Chicago in 1930 and by 1959 had already been awarded the Ingram Merrill Award. Since then, Gorchov has been recognized several times, with honors as prestigious as the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship Award for Painting in 1994 and now lives in Brooklyn, NY.

So this was a real treat to have 2 special pieces for this exhibition!

Another important artist Jacques Jarrige's art free form piece lays above the mantel, sourced through the Valerie Goodman Gallery breaks the hard edged lines that repeat throughout this entrance, with it's fluid and organic form.

As we walk into the house, we are reminded of the sacrifice and life long dedication of the late Evelyn Lauder, and what Holiday House really is all about....
contributing to the overall awareness of Breast Cancer, for both men and women, of all ages and race.

A TRIBUTE TO EVELYN LAUDER

"In Great Taste" - Fresh Simple Recipes for Eating & Living Well by Evelyn Lauder

Evelyn Lauder (1936-2011), for over 50 years, was the Senior Corporate Vice President and Head of Fragrance Development Worldwide for the Estée Lauder Companies Inc, but perhaps was really best known for her work in bringing global awareness to women's health issues, such as breast cancer. After her personal experience with early stage breast cancer in 1987, led her in 1992, to co-create, with Alexandra Penney of SELF magazine, the *Pink Ribbon* which is recognized as the worldwide symbol of breast health.

Mrs. Lauder was also Chairman of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), which she founded in 1993, and which is the beneficiary of all proceeds from this year's Holiday House. Among her many passions, Mrs. Lauder was a dedicated photographer represented in many public and private collections, such as The Whitney Museum of American Art & two photography books published of her own work, "The Seasons Observed" and "An Eye for Beauty".

So if you have a second, please head over to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation site, and if you can donate, that would be wonderful... if not, please at least be informed about this disease and how you can protect yourself and your loved ones.

Off to see the Boston Showhouse tomorrow, so will do my best to continue my Holiday House coverage.. stay tuned and have a nice weekend.

Holiday House 2012: Tobi Fairley

Tobi Fairley
Elegant pink tones are the happy touches of color in Tobi Fairley's room, entitled "Spring Forward" at Holiday House NY this year.

Not "bubble gum" nor "dusty rose", but instead just the right shade of pink, for both men and women to feel comfortable.

Many of you know Tobi Fairley's work -  named one of Traditional Home’s Top 20 Young Designers in America, and more recently has received much attention and acclaim from design professionals as well, through her work promoting the profession of design through her Design Camps and mentoring.

With an overall black and white theme through pattern and layering, Tobi's room is very different in tone and mood than that of the space by Geoffrey Bradfield that I shared on the blog yesterday. Just goes to show you how many variations and styles are possible if you wanted to incorporate this color palette scheme into your home.

So many client ask how artwork looks against wallcoverings with pattern .. and here these Jane Booth monochromatic paintings are simply elevated and highlighted against the Phillips Jeffries *Union Sqaure* black and white grasscloth covered panels.

Tobi Fairley Home, a collection of fabrics, pillows and lighting, debuted as part of Hickory Chair’s Centennial Furniture Collection in the Fall of 2011, and most of the furniture pieces are tailored design pieces from the Hickory Chair line, some of which are customized with this "faux bois" textile, such as these ottomans, part of the collection which you can order directly from Tobi Fairley Home.

Merida Meridian area rugs - Cortina Black Diamond rug

One of my favorites of the Hickory Chair line, the Leigh armless sofa, which can be made to measure. I have specified it for clients on several occasions and it is wide enough & is so comfortable - enough to sleep on .. believe me!

One great blog post, from Tobi's Blog, showcased a historical look back on some of the Hickory Chair furniture pieces and how they were transformed by Tobi in a contemporary design featured in At Home in Arkansas.

Some of the Hickory Chair furniture items which have been made custom by Tobi

A sprinkle of luxury and very "Tobi Green" with these stunning Murano Glass lamps, by Swank Lighting, which almost seem as though they are glowing with the light shining through them...

An overall comfortable look, easy and cozy, especially brought together with this dark sisal rug by Merida Meridian and these personal touches on the writing desk.

Dunes & Duchess sconce

Traditional inspired elements, in the Dunes and Duchess scones (above) and the new Global Views ceramic bust (below) help create contrast, as they are placed within a modern twist. This was most certainly the most prevalent theme recurring throughout the Holiday House designed rooms.

A nod to tradition, in a very contemporary way ..

Never forget to look up! Phillip Jefferies wallcovering highlights the ceiling

Ceilings that sparkle, a dark fireplace surround, and many decorative elements that show us another side of Tobi Fairley's design aesthetic - one of the many exciting reasons to visit and share showhouses such as this one.

Don't forget, Holiday House is open through November 18th.
Head to the site now, to purchase your tickets, and remember this is for a wonderful cause - to support the research and fight against Breast Cancer.

More tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Holiday House 2012 - Geoffrey Bradfield

Continuing from yesterday's post on Charlotte Moss' room at Holiday House NY, today I return downstairs.

This space is entitled "Remembrance of Things Passed", and is one of the main rooms on the ground floor of Holiday House NY this year. Inspiration from the past play an important role in the conceptualization of this room, as Geoffrey Bradfield described himself during a recent panel at the Design & Decoration Building:
"When I come into a room, the point of view is usually based upon the architecture, and location.... in the case of Holiday House, the mansion is so beautiful that I felt an overwhelming sense of nostalgia that I didn't want to ignore. That was the main thrust of the atmosphere."

South African born, Geoffrey Bradfield was well-established in Johannesburg before moving to New York City in the late 1970's. A career that spans a time at McMillen, Inc, & as a Partner of the late Jay Spectre, before establishing his firm. Today, Geoffrey Bradfield Inc has offices in NY, Palm Beach and Dubai, and is led by himself and his associate, Company Vice President Roric Tobin.

Homes such as that of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's estate in Long Island, the restoration of the late King Hussein's mansion in Maryland, their private jets and yachts, and unique office environments and hotel spaces on every corner of the globe are what they do best.

Plaster busts and deer / antlers and hints to animal inspired patterns are recurring decorative elements that appear in various forms, shapes and sizes throughout the house this year.. Trend Spotting also part of the experience!

Key sources for this space: Kyle Bunting and Stark Carpet, both of which Geoffrey has partnered with having designed a line of textiles and wall coverings, called Geoffrey Bradfield Signature Collection.

Astek Wallcovering (who I have covered on the blog before) that helped create the fabulous wall panels, Fine Arts Funriture,  Nohra Haime Gallery, Interiors by Royale, Christopher Hyland, J. Robert Scott, Lladro, Plaster artist Stephen Antonson and sculptors and Karen Dale Turdo.

An Asian inspired white lacquered wood sideboard with lacquered doors, drawers and decorative nickel hardware by Renzo Rutili from John Salibello Antiques in the far corner with green accent artwork, as the only true accent color in the space.  and  Newel

.

Modern art and contemporary Black & White theme play a crucial role in creating visual contrasts in this room, with a strong traditional bias, as is the case in most of Bradfield's work.

Bradfield's work has graced the pages of every leading design magazine, including Architectural Digest as one of the Top 100, Interior Design, Elle Décor, Veranda, Classic Home, House Beautiful, Metropolitan Home and The New York Times, to name only a few.

For more discovery into his work, make sure to check out his books:
  • The newest one, out this year! "A 21st Century Palace", published by Smallwood and Stewart
  • Bradfield is co-author of Point of View: Design by Jay Spectre (1991).
  • Author of Celebration: Christmas in New York (1993)
  • Geoffrey Bradfield - Defining Millennium Modern (2004).
  • Geoffrey Bradfield Ex Arte, published by Panache Partners (2009)
Many of these you can buy on Amazon (here).

More on the Holiday House rooms tomorrow! In the meantime, find a way to make a difference as well, and support Breast Cancer Awareness month in any way you can.

Holiday House 2012: Charlotte Moss

One of the many highlights of my year is when Holiday House NYC with Traditional Home Magazine opens it's doors. Not only is it an event filled with design inspiration and enthusiasm, but it is an event with great meaning as well.

Charlotte Moss in her room at Holiday House 2012

This year and in honor of the recent passing of Evelyn Lauder, Iris Dankner, founder & event chair of Holiday House, brings the attention to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation as the beneficiary of this year's event. Now in it's fifth season, Holiday House welcomes Christopher Hyland, of Hyland Magazine as Chairman and Sara Gore as Vice Chairman, as well as a long list of acclaimed and talented interior designers.

I was able to visit each room, and speak with many of these designers, and hope to share many of them, beginning today with the Charlotte Moss, in her room entitled "Everyday is a Holiday", keeping with the Holiday theme each designer was to choose.

Such as you would hope to find, a mood board laden with images, cuttings, souvenirs, fill the wall above the secretaire, such as Charlotte shares in her new book *A Visual Life* and on her blog C'est Inspiré, "what is inspiring".

A visual library that makes you dream, and sets the mood for the who lives here.. her wants, and spirit. These trinkets and objet d'art are what fill the shelves, and are little surprises throughout the room.

It's fresh and feminine, without being overly "cute" or childish.
The mixtures in textures and patterns, classical and contemporary, solid and floral, are part of the skilled layering that make Charlotte Moss great at what she does!

ShangriLa Sisal Charlotte Moss for Stark Carpet acts as a wonderful solid base, for an antique rug, with hints of sparkle and modernity in the corner, mimicking this organic shape, in the Bangle Lamp by Currey & Co.

Among the many details and surprises, the Isabel and Charlotte fabrics from the Fabricut designed collection also make an appearance, as well as books from J.K. Rowling to one of my favorites, Encyclopedia of the Exquisite.

Highlighted: A miniature chair collection which filled the bookshelf

Details from the Desk

Mondrian mirror by Lorin Marsh, with a highlight of the Soicher Marin - Conde Nast Archive Collection on the mantel, which was launched with Charlotte Moss at High Point Market last week.

Many of the pieces of furniture are from Charlotte's own collection, as well as piece from Century Furniture for which she has designed several pieces. The Atlanta Canopy Bed used here as a main feature, and shown with customized fabric and trims, reiterating how each piece can be transformed with the help of a designer to make each item your very own.
